Welcome
to Milwee Middle School where engineering is embraced daily!
Course Description: Reading, writing, viewing, and speaking language correctly all comprise aspects of language arts. During this year, students will continue to build reading skills, construct meaning from a wide variety of texts and become familiar with literary genre and academic vocabulary terms. In addition, expository writing, persuasive writing, and poetry will be a significant focus throughout the school year. Students will also prepare speeches and learn public speaking skills. Daily vocabulary, spelling, and grammar practice will occur and all lessons will prepare students to be successful as they continue along their educational path. This course is designed to enable students to master the language skills needed to collect and share information. The students will engage in collaborative and individual activities that allow them to experience new perspectives and to share their own.
Projects: Individual and group projects will be assigned at various times throughout the year. These projects will require prior planning and preparation.
Homework: All students need to have a book on grade level to read each night for 20 minutes. This is expected to be done throughout the year. Students will be informed of regular homework assignments in class.
Writing Portfolio: All graded writing assignments will be placed in your portfolio. These portfolios will remain in the classroom. We will use them often to reflect on our work. If you or your parent would like to check out your portfolio, let me know and we will make arrangements.
Grading: Grades are assigned according to school and county policies. Late work may be turned in for a reduced grade. If special circumstances arise, a parent note is requested.
Preparation and Preparedness: Students are expected to participate in classroom activities and discussions. Students are expected to be prepared for class every day. This means bringing the necessary materials and being in their assigned seats and ready to work when the bell rings. Students should take care of sharpening pencils and retrieving items from their backpacks before the tardy bell rings.
Supply List: All students need 1-70 page spiral, 1-1 ½ -2” binder, sharpened pencils, a set of dividers, and a package of loose-leaf paper, tissues, and hand sanitizer.
If any student needs help in order to fulfill the supplies they may speak to the guidance department.
Communication: All students and parents are requested to be on the county’s Skyward program, where daily attendance and grades are updated regularly. (go to Milwee’s website for more information)
Please update both phone numbers and e-mails, as only parents are able to do this and I will be sending information to you throughout the year using this system.
I will contact you within 48 hours of a phone call or e-mail. Many days I am only able to access my e-mail at the start and end of the day due to double-block schedules and meetings. E-mail is the easiest way to get in touch with me.
I am looking forward to working with your child in their pursuit of excellence. Please e-mail me if you have any questions or concerns with your name, your child’s name and the class period I have them for Language Arts.
Thank you for your interest and support.
Sincerely,
Gail M. Newton
